Pre-Hike Coffee & Rock Shelter Lunch: Seven Hollows Trail

Seven Hollows Trail

Ready to lose yourself in one of the most prehistoric-looking landscapes in Arkansas? We are heading back to Petit Jean to explore the Seven Hollows Trail—a winding journey through deep sandstone canyons, towering natural bridges, and hidden rock shelters that feel like another world.

THE PLAN:
● Trailhead Coffee: I’ll have the overlanding kitchen set up starting at 09:00. Come grab a pour and let's wake up before we hit the dirt.
● The Journey: We are hiking the 4.5-mile loop clockwise. This gives us a gradual descent into the hollows and saves the most dramatic rock formations for the second half of the day.
● The Natural Bridge Cafe: About 1.5 miles in, we’ll take a short coffee break under the massive sandstone bridge. I’ll be packing the Yeti with a fresh batch for a second boost and for anyone who didn't make it in time for a cup at the trailhead. I'll have plenty to share!
● Rock Shelter Lunch: For our midpoint, we’re heading deep into the hollows to find a massive bluff shelter. We’ll take a long break in the shade of these ancient overhangs to eat and hang out.
● The Finish: After lunch, we’ll make the final climb out of the hollows and back to the trailhead. We should be wrapped up with plenty of time for you to head home, fire up the grill, and enjoy the rest of the holiday weekend!

WHAT TO BRING:
● Food: Pack a full lunch! We are spending extra time at our rock shelter spot to refuel and hang out.
● Water: 2 liters minimum.
● Footwear: Sturdy boots are a must for the rocky terrain.

THE DETAILS:
● Meetup: 09:00 at the Seven Hollows Trailhead.
● Trail time: 09:30.
● Travel: It is about a 1 hour and 15 minute drive from Little Rock. Plan to head out by 07:45 to account for arrival and coffee.
● Post-Hike: Optional trip to Mather Lodge for drinks and AC before heading back to LR.

Arkansas River Valley Excursion

2480 S State Highway 309, Paris, AR

Date: Saturday, May 23, 2026.
Time: 9:30am start time - end time sometime in afternoon.

PACK A LUNCH AND WATER

CLOSED-TOE FOOTWEAR BOOTS AND FULL-LENGTH PANTS ARE RECOMMENDED

Location: south of I-40 near Paris

Specific Location: 2480 S State Highway 309 (also known as Mt. Magazine Scenic Byway), Paris, AR 72855 (house number is on the mailbox)
* NOTE: google maps says that this Hwy is also called S. Elm St - this is incorrect! The other name for Hwy 309 here is Mt. Magazine Scenic Byway. So don't get confused!

Parking: at next door neighbor's to the west (3670 on mailbox). Do not enter that driveway (on top of hill). Enter the same neighbor's next driveway (along new privacy fence) and
drive into a parking pad. The host will meet us there.

Please RSVP: Please RSVP to Sid Vogelpohl 479-847-0974.

Level of Difficulty: Ridgetop is level. House is on an elevated pad with house-access by steps on three sides. There are trails along rocky to bouldery slope below house of moderate difficulty. Access to valley will be by vehicle via highway and dirt county road. Trails in valley are mostly level with several short slopes and occasional embedded small cobbles.

_____________________________________________________________________

Sid and Jeanette Vogelpohl refer to their 50-acre property as “Know Your Natives Garden” in reference to articles of that name authored by Sid that were posted on anps.org over a 10-year period. Sid's plant inventory for the property has 390 forb species, 75 tree species, 17 fern species along with various grasses and sedges. Trails extend away from the house along the ridge and down the cliffy and rock talus slopes, through woods, across an 80’ bridge to an abandoned stream channel and field below.

After exploring the area around the house, there will be a brown bag lunch on the deck at around 11:30 before driving to the valley to explore that area.

After leaving Sid's property you will take an approximately 50 minute drive to Pine Ridge Gardens. Pine Ridge Gardens are owned by OCANPS member Brent Baker and are one of the premier native plant nurseries in Arkansas.

Please note: In case of inclement weather, this trip will be postponed and an announcement will be made on the ANPS page.

Arkansas River Valley Excursion

2480 S State Highway 309, Paris, AR

Arkansas River Valley Excursion
Know Your Natives Garden (KYN) near Paris and Pine Ridge Gardens Native Plant Nursery near Dardanelle

Sid and Jeanette Vogelpohl refer to their 50-acre property as “Know Your Natives Garden” in reference to articles of that name authored by Sid that were posted on anps.org over a 10 year period. Sid's plant inventory for the property has 390 forb species, 75 tree species, 17 fern species along with various grasses and sedges. Highway 309 (route to Mount Magazine) follows the top of Pine Ridge from which the elevations on the property drops 200' via cliffy slopes (upper) and rocky talus slopes (lower) to Short Mountain Creek (city water supply). The property is mostly wooded along with a steeply sloped glade below the house with native grasses and a several-acre mowed area in the valley. The rocky creek, bordered by trees and shrubs has an 80' bridge. An abandoned stream channel, draining into the creek, has wetland characteristics that support ferns and other wetland species.

Native plants, along with some non-native favorites, surround the house, along the driveway and near-house paths. Trails extend away from the house along the ridge and down the cliffy slopes. In the valley walking will be along mostly level trails. After exploring the area around the house we will have a brown bag lunch on the deck at around 11:30 before driving to the valley to explore that area.

After leaving Sid's property we will take an approximately 50 minute drive to Pine Ridge Gardens. Pine Ridge Gardens are owned by OCANPS member Brent Baker and are one of the premier native plant nurseries in Arkansas. We will visit the nursery's new location 6 miles south of Dardanelle. Brent will be holding an open house so this is an excellent chance to purchase native plants.

Directions to meeting place: KYN Gardens are south of I-40 near Paris. House is located at 2480 South State Highway 309 (house number on the mailbox). However parking is sooner at next door neighbor's to the west (3670 on mailbox). Do not enter that driveway (on top of hill). Enter the same neighbor's next driveway (along new privacy fence) and drive into a parking pad. The host will meet us there. NOTE: Facebook maps shows Hwy 309 and S. Elm Street as being the same. They are not - make sure you are on Hwy 309.
