Fall has finally arrived in Arkansas, and there's a lot going on to celebrate it! Wander through gems and crystals at the Mount Ida Gem, Mineral & Craft Show, pick your own pumpkin and tackle a six-acre corn maze at the Arkansas Pumpkin Fest in Black Rock, or step back into Dragonstone Springs at the Arkansas Renaissance Festival in Mount Vernon. Foodies can hit two festivals in one at the Spa City Food Truck Festival and Big Steam Blues & Roots Music Festival in downtown Hot Springs, adventurers can chase whitewater at the Arkansas Canoe Club Rendezvous in Malvern, and the community can come together for a good cause at the Buddy Walk Arkansas at War Memorial Stadium.
Fall has finally arrived and some much needed rain along with it! Look for rain starting Thursday and lasting into next week. Daytime temperature may actually dip into the 70’s on Saturday and evening temperature dipping into the 50s Sunday night.

Grand Opening of the Arkansas Forest Health Research Center

On Friday, October 2, the University of Arkansas at Monticello will hold a public ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of the Arkansas Forest Health Research Center on UAM’s Monticello campus at 2 p.m.
The grand opening is free and open to the public and will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by refreshments and tours of the research center.
In February 2024, the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration received approval to allocate $16.8 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds to UAM for the construction of the center. At the groundbreaking ceremony in October 2024, Attorney General Tim Griffin announced an additional $1 million from state settlement funds for the project. The family of John W. Spivey also contributed to support the addition of the John W. Spivey Conference Center.
The research center, poised to be among the top facilities of its kind in the Southeast United States, is designed to address a critical gap in Arkansas’ forest research capacity. Prior to the Arkansas Forest Health Research Center, the state lacked in-state facilities to test for forest diseases, invasive insects and climate threats that increasingly threaten its $16 billion annual forestry economy. Estimates indicate the center will generate a $157 million annual economic benefit to Arkansas by protecting against lost values of trees and forest products and increasing the workforce for forestry, allied health, agriculture, wildlife and related fields.
In addition to the research wing and the conference center, the building includes a wing of biology and chemistry labs to benefit all UAM students, including those in natural sciences, allied health, agriculture, natural resources and other highly demanded career fields.

Eligibility:
-Only 2 non‑Asian players allowed per roster.
-10 players per team
Rules:
- No open‑hand receive on serve receive
Players must use forearms, fists, or controlled body contact.
- Serves cannot touch the net
Any serve that clips or grazes the net is considered dead.
- Contact to the head, legs, or chest is a dead ball
Any accidental or intentional contact to these areas stops the play.
- Sets must not spin excessively
Similar to beach volleyball: clean, controlled contact with minimal rotation.
- During an airborne attack, the attacker cannot set the ball over while in the air.
- Over-sets are not allowed (sets that crosses the net)
- Players can set the ball over, but they must be facing the net or the direction they are setting to.

Join the Hot Springs Parks and Recreation Department for a Keep Arkansas Beautiful Cleanup event from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, October 3, along the Hot Springs Creek Greenway Trail at the new Jean White Wallace Wetlands Trailhead, 570 T.V. Hill Road.
This is also a good time to meet local Master Naturalists and learn how to identify and remove invasive species.
Grabbers, collection bags, gloves, and other goodies are available at check-in.
Please wear walking or water shoes.

Fresh Gulf shrimp, sausage, corn, potatoes, and all the fixings — plus desserts, sweet tea, and more. $10 a plate to help cover cost. Anything over cost will be donated to the Benny and LaVel Scholarship Fund at Arkansas Tech University!!

The Arkansas Traveller is one of the oldest 100 miles races there is, already having 34 runnings under our belt (buckle). What makes the AT100 so unique among the many ultras today is the combination of volunteer support from the running community and beyond, the beautiful scenery of the Ouachita Trail and Forest Service roads, and the sneaky-hard runnable hills that will challenge you from beginning to end. This race is considered by many to be a great first 100 for anyone looking to test themselves at the premier ultra distance. But, every year we are filled with past Traveller finishers that come back again and again to this incredible race.

Lake Frierson State Park’s Women in the Woods crew hits the trail for a backpacking trip at Village Creek State Park. We will be hiking 2 miles in and out (4 miles over 2 days) along the moderately strenuous Austell Trail and Military Road Trail to camp for the night in a designated spot and then venture back the next day. This event is free, but registration is required, and ladies will be expected to bring their own gear and food for the full backpacking experience. This event is part of the Women in the Woods series at Lake Frierson State Park. Women can grow their roots in Arkansas State Parks. Join us on the first Sunday of each month at Lake Frierson State Park to explore outdoor skills and form personal connections with park resources and recreation opportunities. We will explore a glade, take in the sunset at a scenic overlook, and view American Indian rock art to discover the windows into the past that these images provide. This hike is 3/4-mile long. Please bring a flashlight, wear sturdy shoes and bring along water.
