A Town Built on Coal
Coal Hill got its start way back in 1880, thanks to the coal mines that gave the town its name. Back then, it was one of the busiest places in Johnson County. People came from all over to work in the mines, and for a while, Coal Hill was the biggest city in the area!
The town also played an important part in Arkansas history. In 1888, Coal Hill was at the center of a big investigation about how workers were treated in the mines. While the investigation focused on inmate labor, it helped bring about better laws for workers all across the state.
