Artist Reception for Wild & Repurposed: Lisa Crews, Dawn Ward, Rheo Rhees

409 W Van Buren, Eureka Springs

Meet and interact with the artists of the month:

Lisa Crews
Artist Statement:
When I was a little girl drawing was one of the few things I would get praise for instead of scolded. I have always practiced making art as a preoccupation and now for a few years as an occupation.
Clay is my primary medium but I enjoy making whatever I want out of any material I choose. The subjects in my work come from my reverence for nature, a desire to make happy characters, and an urge to make an occasional political jab. I also recreate historic ceramics and make pieces that reference iconic works of art.
I am a contemporary folk artist working in mixed media.
My work is currently available at EureKan Gallery and Curated Gallery in Eureka Springs, Gallery 26 in Little Rock and the Arkansas Craft Gallery in Mountain View.

Dawn Ward
Artist Statement:
Dawn Ward works in a variety of media including digital photography, printmaking, sculpture and fiber art. Her current work is solely based on the use of recycled, upcycled and reused materials from found objects, vintage jewelry, fabric scraps, used clothing and yarn. She has a MA in studio art, a PhD in Art Education and has taught university classes and workshops for over 26 years. She exhibits both locally and nationally and is the Advancement Coordinator for the Eureka Springs School of the Arts.

Rheo Rhees
Artist Statement:
My love of pebbles, beach glass, and pottery, began while living on an island in SE Alaska. I would spend hours scanning the beaches for “little treasures.” Always intrigued, and wishful, to know what story each piece could tell, yet knowing, they will hold their story tightly within.
One day I stumbled upon the work of Artist Sharon Nowlan; whom I happen to think is the “Guru” of simply stated, classy pebble art; which inspired me to recreate many pieces while adding my own twist.
I like to call my art “WASHED-UP” with the belief that there is beauty in things broken. Derived from nature; softened by the elements, only to once again, be new. I believe sometimes less is more, and that is what I enjoy, keeping my art pieces simple and classic, not to overstated.
One thing I do not do, is alter my stones, beach glass, or beach pottery. I take pride in using each piece “as is.” I think each little piece has value in exactly how they were formed, tumbling on the ocean floor until chance had it, it lands gently on the shores of a beach.
The beach glass and pottery come from SE Alaska; the pebbles come from various lakes such as, Bear Lake Idaho/Utah, and Flathead Lake in Montana, as well as the many beaches of Irelands Celtic Sea/Atlantic Ocean.
My home is in the NW corner of Arkansas, in the wonderfully unique, and artsy town of Eureka Springs

Exhibition on Screen Presents, “Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse”

100 River Market Ave, Little Rock

Long considered spaces for expressing color, light and atmosphere, the garden has occupied the creative minds of some of the world's greatest artists.

About the Film:

Claude Monet was an avid horticulturist and arguably the most important painter of gardens in the history of art, but he was not alone. Great artists like Van Gogh, Bonnard, Sorolla, Sargent, Pissarro and Matisse all saw the garden as a powerful subject for their art. These great artists, along with many other famous names, feature in an innovative and extensive exhibition from the Royal Academy of Art, London.

From the exhibition walls to the wonder and beauty of artists’ gardens like Giverny and Seebüll, the film takes a magical and widely travelled journey to discover how different contemporaries of Monet built and cultivated modern gardens to explore expressive motifs, abstract color, decorative design and utopian ideas. Guided by passionate curators, artists and garden enthusiasts, this remarkable collection of Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, and avant-garde artists of the early twentieth century will reveal the rise of the modern garden in popular culture and the public’s enduring fascination with gardens today. Long considered spaces for expressing color, light and atmosphere, the garden has occupied the creative minds of some of the world's greatest artists. As Monet said, ‘Apart from painting and gardening, I’m no good at anything'. For lovers of art and/or lovers of gardens, this is an ideal film.

Important Information:

Film Start Time: Doors open at 3:00pm, and Exhibition on Screen's "Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse" will begin promptly at 4:00pm. As our films are general admission seating, please be sure to arrive early to secure your seat. Beer, wine, and concessions will be available.

Poetry @ The Public Author Talk: Jenni Case & Jim Fowler

Faulkner County Library

Join us for our last Poetry @ The Public session for Spring 2024!

We are thrilled to continue celebrating poetry at the public library with our final authors of the spring season, local poets Jennie Case and Jim Fowler!

You are invited to an afternoon of light refreshments, poetry, and community. Doors will open at 2:00 pm and patrons are invited to meet-and-greet with the authors and fellow literary lovers. At 2:30 pm, we'll take our seats and enjoy readings from Jennie and Jim, followed by a Q&A with the audience.

About the authors:

Jim Fowler is a former member of the UCA English Department faculty. In May of 2023, he retired after a distinguished career as a teacher, poet, and scholar — a career that included 25 years as editor of Slant, the department’s international journal of contemporary poetry. As a poet and fiction writer, Jim has published work in dozens of literary journals over the years, and it has been collected in two volumes: The Pain Trader and Other Poems (Golden Antelope Press: 2020) and Field Trip: Stories (Cornerpost Press: 2022). His latest collection of poems, Postcards from Home, is scheduled for publication later this year. To honor Jim on his retirement, as well as his predecessor as Slant editor Richard Hudson, the UCA English Department created a new award, the Hudson-Fowler Prize in Poetry.

Jennie Case is an Associate Professor of Creative Writing at UCA, where she also serves as faculty advisor of Arkana, the literary journal staffed and run by students in the MFA program. She is the author of Sawbill: A Search for Place (University of New Mexico Press, 2018). Her essays, poetry, and prose have appeared widely in journals such as Orion, ISLE: Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment, Zone 3, North American Review, Poet Lore, and Stone Canoe, which awarded her work the 2014 Allen and Nirelle Galson Prize in Fiction. In addition, she serves as the Assistant Nonfiction Editor of Terrain.org: A Journal of the Built + Natural Environments.

This event is FREE and open to the public.
