19th Annual: Carving in the Ozarks

143 E Van Buren, Eureka Springs

Welcome to the 19th annual Carving in the Ozarks chainsaw carving festival held right in the heart of the Ozarks in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, on April 26-27, 2024.

This event brings together some of the most talented carvers from around the country (and even some international talent) to showcase their skills and compete for cash prizes.

WHAT TO EXPECT: This festival brings the art and mastery of chainsaw carving to a family friendly festival. Throughout the festival, you and your family will be able to watch as raw logs are transformed into stunning works of art right before your eyes. Whether you're a fan of bears, eagles, or other wildlife, you'll find something to admire among the many pieces on display.

But the festival isn't just about the finished carvings - it's also an opportunity to help support some local organizations through a live auction held at 4PM on Saturday, April 27th. The proceeds from the auction will go towards helping area food pantries and to the Eureka Springs High School Skills Lab.

Unable to stay for the auction? Many of our carvers come with ready-made inventory, ready to pack up and take home with you!

With a perfect combination of art and nature, Carving in the Ozarks is a must-see event for anyone who loves both the great outdoors and great art.

Mark your calendars and come join us for this unforgettable experience on April 26-27, 2024!

This event is graciously funded in part by the Eureka Springs CAPC.

DRAWING AND PAINTING BOTANICAL COMPOSITIONS

Ozark Folk Center State Park
1032 Park Avenue, Mountain View

PLEASE NOTE: This is an event that requires attendance on all days listed.

Meeting Place: Visitor Center Lobby

Class Registration Fee: $43.00

Class & materials fee: $125.00

Explore the stunning plant life in the Heritage Herb Garden at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. In this two day class, you will develop several botanical compositions by spending time sketching an assortment of flowers, herbs, and other plants found throughout the Craft Village. With the sketches as the star component, students will then apply subtle areas of color with watercolor or acrylic paint. The work may be as realistic or as abstract as you wish. We will not concentrate on creating an exact rendering of the subject but an aesthetically pleasing work where the sketch is visible.

You will create several compositions from your sketches. You will consider your overall design but not overthink it. This class is about giving you artistic license to create. Think about interesting juxtapositions and examine the elements of shape, line, texture, and color. Let your inner artist shine!

Minimum number of students is 4, maximum 12. Registration is required and closes two weeks before the beginning of class. The registration fee is to be paid upon sign up. The class fee is due directly to Dana at the beginning of class.

Taught by Dana Finimore.

Meet your instructor:
Jennifer Whitman joined the Craft Village at the Ozark Folk Center in 2017. It wasn’t her first foray into sewing and quilting. She was born in Wynne and raised in Beebe and had learned to sew as a child. One of her personal treasures is a quilting frame - the old style that lowers from the ceiling – which she inherited from her grandmother. At 19, Whitman was married and starting a family at which time she started making baby quilts. She has made lots of quilts since. Now she is making baby quilts for her grandchildren, the latest a charm quilt.

As a craft interpreter at OFC, Whitman worked in gardening and the fiber arts, print, and basket shops in addition to the quilt shop. She explained, “I like variety!” and she enjoys the camaraderie of the Craft Village.

"Jennifer Whitman is a generous, creative, talented part of that Village, and we appreciate her being a part of our park,” said Jeanette Larson, Craft Director. “Jennifer has found it a place to learn many skills. She is generous with teaching and passing on what she has learned.”

Looking for lodging? The Cabins at Dry Creek are located in the park just down the hill from your classroom. SoNA Beyond - Transcending Words

401 W Mountain St, Fayetteville

Celebrate National Poetry Month with SoNA and FPL in this unique music and spoken word performance.

The Symphony of Northwest Arkansas and the Fayetteville Public Library team up with the University of Arkansas Program in Creative Writing & Translation for a free concert celebrating sung and spoken poetry. The SoNA Singers, directed by choral conductor Terry Hicks, will perform nine powerful pieces, while UA poets Cal Paule, Connor Weirich, and Sarah Barch share the original poetry that inspired the concert pieces. Our poets will also premiere newly commissioned works as part of the performance. In this event, we celebrate the transcendent ability of the written word, as well as the ability of music to transform words by providing color, context and emotion. This event is free and open to the public.

SoNA Beyond is sponsored by the WalMart Foundation with additional support from Experience Fayetteville.

Learn more at faylib.org/event/10318594.

About the Poets:

Cal Paule is a poet and translator from Saint Paul, MN. They translate poetry from Spanish and Irish into English. They are an MFA candidate in literary translation at the University of Arkansas. Their first book of translated poems is coming out in November 2024 from Ugly Duckling Presse, Black Box Named Like to Me by Diana Garza Islas.

Originally from Cincinnati, Connor Weirich is currently an MFA candidate and graduate assistant at the UA. He writes poetry about grief, love, space, ants and being bad at things. His biggest inspirations include cats in windows and the tenacious 10-20 grounds at the bottom of every pot of coffee he makes.

Sarah Barch is a third-year MFA candidate in poetry at the UA. She grew up in Olive Branch, MS and graduated from he University of Mississippi with at BA in English and minors in Ars and Classics. She currently has two manuscripts in the works -- a collection of dark, absurd folk tales about the South, religion, and gender, and a collection of translated poems from lesser-known Ancient Greek women writers. When she is not reading or writing, Sarah enjoys cooking, sewing, and watching basketball.

About SoNA Beyond:

SoNA Beyond showcases the vast spectrum of possibilities for classical music to reach audiences in new and innovative ways. SoNA Beyond presents a variety of concerts, programs, and other creative arts experiences that go beyond the symphony’s annual mainstage season of concerts. The new series features symphony musicians in creative ways, including chamber music performances, outdoor educational concerts, community partnerships, groundbreaking contemporary experiences, and more. SoNA Beyond rethinks the boundaries of what a symphony can do to innovate the artform, include new voices, and immerse SoNA in the Northwest Arkansas community – to give audiences an expansive view of what classical music is and who it serves.

MUTTSU NO KAZOKU: SIX FAMILIES’ JOURNEY FROM INTERNMENT TO SCOTT

Plantation Agriculture Museum
4815 AR Hwy 161 South, Scott

Meeting Place: Museum

While many people are familiar with the stories of the internment of Japanese Americans during the Second World War, most likely don’t give much thought to what happened to the people after the war’s end. For a group of families interned in the Rohwer War Relocation Center, the end of the war brought with it a move to the farming community of Scott, Arkansas.

The postwar years would bring many changes for both the community of Scott and the new residents. While the Japanese American families did find success in transplanting their central California-honed vegetable growing operation to the fertile soil of central Arkansas, they also faced the challenges of being neither white nor Black in the segregated south.

From March 16 until July 27, 2024, Plantation Agriculture Museum State Park is hosting an exhibit called “Muttsu no Kazoku: Six Families’ Journey from Internment to Scott” telling a story that has long been overlooked. This exhibit will explore life for the Shingu, Futamachi, Nakamura, Oshima, Yada, and Yoshimura families before, during, and after World War II with special focus on their lives in Scott.
