The Delta Cultural Center will host an exhibit opening for Small Works on Paper starting at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 11, 2025. This event will feature food and entertainment. Guest speakers about Small Works on Paper will also be present. This art exhibit will run from July 11 thru August 22, 2025. Our opening is free and everyone is invited. Small Works on Paper is a juried touring, visual art exhibition that showcases 2D artwork created by Arkansas artists that is no longer than 18-by-24 inches.

The Small Works on Paper exhibition travels to up to 10 venues throughout the state in a yearlong show and offers Arkansas artists an opportunity to showcase their artwork to patrons all over the state. An out-of-state juror selects a maximum of 40 pieces of artwork for the exhibition.

This year's exhibition features 40 pieces of artwork by 35 Arkansas artists. The exhibition will tour to nine venues statewide.

More than 200 artwork entries were received this year that were juried by Mario A. Robinson, a full-time artist based in New Jersey. De Pata y Sazon - Artist-in-Residence Exit Reception at the Community Creative Center

Community Creative Center

De Pata y Sazón – Solo Exhibition by Artist-in-Residence Azalia Molina
Exhibition Dates: July 1 – July 30, 2025

So… what’s De Pata y Sazón all about?
It’s a phrase I came up with to bring together two ideas that represent us: De Pata is about being grounded, firmly rooted in who we are and where we come from. Sazón is that spark, that flavor, that passion we as Latinos bring to everything we do, y’know, that "I don’t know what" that makes us unmistakably us.

This project feels like coming home. It’s a tribute to who we were and who we are today. It’s that deep feeling of missing home, carried with us in every color, every memory, and every flavor.

With an organic and folkloric style, the show features acrylic paintings of iconic fruits and linocut prints of popular meals and brands paired with familiar sayings. But there's more, an installation inspired by Latin American street markets, complete with handmade pottery, hammocks, hanging textiles, and all those little details that transport us back to spaces filled with connection, conversation, and community.

De Pata y Sazón is a celebration of cultural pride. A blend of who we were and who we continue to be. It’s about how our roots keep us grounded… and full of flavor.

See you there!

Central Arkansas Bonsai Society July Meeting

CALS - Sanders Library

UPDATE.....UPDATE.....UPDATE.....UPDATE.....UPDATE.....UPDATE.....
Note from Bob:
The July meeting of the Central Arkansas Bonsai Society will be held on July 12 at the Amy Sanders Library in Sherwood. We meet from 10a till 1p. If you are able to come a little early to help set up the tables and chairs all help is appreciated.
This month's program will be presented by Dana Quattlebaurm. Dana is well known in bonsai circles as an excellent bonsai artist and he will give a presentation on taking care of and styling TROPICAL TREES.

Last month we discussed having everyone bring in their best tree, preferably a TROPICAL tree to stay within the area of TROPICAL TREES this month., and we will have a vote for the best tree of the month for July. We all enjoy seeing each other's trees, so bring in your tree and share.
Some questions have come up about the content and structure of our meetings. if you have any constructive opinions, bring them along.
*****************************
I think we'll see how this month's BEST OF SHOW works out...and if all goes well, we'll do it month to month and maybe have a "traveling trophy".... we are working on that.
*****************************
As Bob mentioned, there has been some minor discussions regarding content and structure of our meetings. Are we not formal enough, or should we be more spontaneous with after presentation discussions?
*****************************
We are still looking for anyone else that would like to volunteer for the Night Bloomers Flower and Horticulutre Show on August 2nd. We'll discuss more details on this at our July meeting.
*****************************
I'll be bringing a few more trees...a couple or larger ones and this may be the last of the trees I'll be bringing this year...UNLESS anyone is interested in Dwarf jade (Portulacaria afra, elephant bush, spekboom, etc). Those are all names for the Dwarf jade...and I have LOTS OF THEM.

Friends in the Sky: How astronomers use Hubble, Webb and other space telescopes to explore the multiwavelength Universe

Abstract:
Every time you look at the sky in a different type of light, you get a new perspective. Our eyes can only see visible light, but space telescopes can collectively see across the electromagnetic spectrum. Every space telescope has its own strengths, and can see a different wavelength range of light. In this talk Dr. Kelly Lepo will explore how Hubble, JWST, and other space telescopes work together to help us form a more complete view of our Universe, from our solar system, to the Milky Way, to distant galaxies.

Full Moon Jumps

1413 East Main St., Clarksville, AR

The skydivers landing area will only be lit by lights on their vehicles and the runway as they plan their approach. To some, it will look like meteors or UFO's when staring at the red, green, and strobe lights heading towards the airport at 130 mph. To our skydiving community, it's just what we do. Bring your chair and watch as skydivers fall through the moonlit sky above Clarksville.

Now why is it called a Buck Moon along with other names?
"Male deer antlers begin to grow in late spring. Antlers grow as fast as ¼ inch per day or one and one half inches per week during this period making them the fastest growing bones in the world. Antlers grow from the pedicel in the buck’s skull. The lengthening daylight in spring triggers the hormones that start the growth each spring. Buck antlers can easily be spotted in full velvet come July. Unlike horns, antlers are bones made mostly of calcium and phosphorus that the deer shed after mating season. Buck antlers lose their velvety coating, usually within a 24-hour period, closer to mating season in fall.

American Indians in Alaska, including the Haida and Tlingit dubbed the July full moon the “Salmon Moon” for its timing with salmon runs. The Wishrams in the Pacific Northwest translates to “Salmon Go Up Rivers In A Group.” (Salmon migrate up rivers to spawn from spring through fall.) The sockeye salmon run typically begins in July and can last through October. July is also a month when the summer runs of chinook and steelhead take place. Salmon spend anywhere from 1 to 6 years in the oceans before returning to their home rivers to spawn.

July’s moon is dubbed the “Time Of Much Ripening” by Mohawk in the Eastern Woodlands. There’s plenty of ripening happening across the United States. For the Shawnee in the Midwestern region, it is the Blackberry moon. In the Northern Plains the Assiniboine noted the red berries while the Lakota named it “When The Chokecherries Are Black.” For the Algonquin from the Northeast to Great Lakes this is the moon when the “Squash Are Ripe.”

More broadly, the Zuni in New Mexico called it the “Limbs Are Broken By Fruit” Moon. Among Ojibwe it’s the “Blueberry Moon.” To the Oneida it is the “String Bean Moon.”

While the berries and fruits ripen, corn is various stages of readiness. The translation of the Cherokee Nation in the Carolinas is “Ripe Corn Moon.” Though corn in the Great Lakes region has a bit of time to go. The Potawatomi name this the “Moon Of The Young Corn.”

In Celtic culture the July moon names included “Wyrt,” “Herb” and/or “Mead Moon.” Wyrt is derived from an Old English word. A herbal garden in Old English language was a Wyrtyard. Wort is the modernized spelling of the word. Those familiar with the beer brewing process recognize wort as the sugary liquid drained from mash used during the fermentation process.

Gardeners and herbalists spot wort used in plant names like St. John’s wort, bishop’s wort and lousewort. Harvesting herbs should be done once the plants have enough foliage to maintain growth after cuttings. By July, most herbs can withstand harvesting.

In addition to medicinal and cooking applications of herbs, they can be used in the mead making process. Of course, one needs honey to ferment into the alcoholic drink. Come July, there’s plenty of nectar giving flowers in bloom for honeybees to make plenty of honey for mead making.

Hay bales are a staple of fall decorations, but July’s moon was known as the “Hay Moon” among Anglo Saxon culture.

Whatever it is called, the July full Moon is a time to appreciate the glory of summer ripeness!"
